At least 35,000 applicants might be compromised, alerts the American embassy

A major data breach in Somalia's e-visa platform may have exposed personal information associated with tens of thousands of applicants, including American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Mogadishu has alerted.

Officials stated had received trustworthy accounts that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising data from at least 35,000 people.

The compromised files distributed through digital channels comprise personal identifiers, images, date of birth information, marriage information, place of residence and email information, per a United States official announcement issued on Thursday.

"This data breach is ongoing and potentially disclose all private information provided to the system," the UK has additionally cautioned travellers.

"Evaluate the dangers before applying for an electronic visa mandatory for travel to the Federal Republic."

Administrative Action

Somali authorities have not issued statements about the security compromise. Nevertheless administration officials has transferred visa application system from the initial application portal to the updated platform, without offering a formal statement.

"While Embassy Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate if personal information is part of the security incident, people who have submitted applications for a Somali e-visa could be impacted," the official communication said.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process mandates all travellers, including those from the self-declared republic of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of the autonomous state, to request admission permits through digital means.

Critics say applicants have experienced additional charges in specific areas, amounting to double charges.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in the early nineties, manages its territory through independent structures although it lacks worldwide acceptance. Mogadishu authorities maintains that the region continues to belong to its national domain.

The claimed security incident exacerbates ongoing disputes involving central government and northern authorities concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. While federal authorities re-established total jurisdiction of national aviation space in the past decade, Somaliland continues to contest this agreement.

Ongoing Conflict

The disagreement escalated further recently after Somaliland's President Abdirahman Irro stated the breakaway region would not accept Somalia's e-visa and ordered that aviation companies are required to secure permission from northern authorities before entering the region's aviation space.

Nevertheless prominent aviation companies have chosen not to accept travelers lacking Somalia's e-visa approval.

On Saturday, Hargeisa's international relations official Abdirahman Dahir Aadan reiterated that "all visitors to Somaliland can acquire their visa at the point of entry", declaring the federal electronic visa platform lacked security and warning that "people's data can fall into radical elements" because of using it.

Aviation Challenges

The conflict has caused some travellers heading to the northern region stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has stated to journalistic entities that the regulations - initially declared earlier this year - were implemented on 10 November.

The minister stated carriers that refuse might be directed to reroute, and asserted numerous flights had already been rerouted.

Jurisdictional Battle

Video evidence released by Hargeisa's civil aviation authority appears to show regional aviation officials giving directions to foreign aircraft commanders - a move hailed internally as a demonstration of Somaliland's autonomy.

However Mogadishu's air transport department maintains it possesses complete jurisdictional power regarding the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes the entire country's aviation space. Officials have directed each flight to pay no attention to all directives provided by sources besides Mogadishu.

Officials cautioned that ignoring federal and global flight regulations could generate safety risks and result in "significant legal repercussions".
