An Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
